PIXSpain Competence Centre launches its activities with EU and national support

The PIXSpain Competence Centre (PIXSpain CC) officially launched its activities in December 2025 after receiving the Government of Spain funding. The initiative was selected in March 2024 following the funding decision of the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) and it is co-funded by the European Union through the Digital Europe Programme and the Spanish Government through the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública under the framework of the PERTE Chip.

The project kick-off meeting took place in July 2025, marking the start of the initial actions required for the establishment and operational deployment of the Competence Centre, following the confirmation of the European funding.

PIXSpain CC closely linked to PIXEurope Pilot Line (a ChipsJU initiative) aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, researchers, and industry by providing access to photonic integration technologies, design and prototyping services, specialised training, technology advisory services, and technology transfer activities. The Centre contributes to accelerating the development, adoption, and industrial impact of photonic integrated technologies in Spain and across Europe, in alignment with the European strategic agendas and programs in semiconductors and photonics.

The PIXSpain CC consortium is coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) working with key Spanish institutions in integrated photonics: Universidad de Málaga (UMA), the Institut de Microelectrònica de Barcelona – Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica from the Consejo Superior de InvestigacionesCientíficas (IMB-CNM), the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), the Fundació Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO), and the Universidad de Vigo (UVIGO).
